Centre
for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT), ahmedabad
In 1962 the
School of Architecture was established to offer a
full undergraduate programme by Prof. B. V.
Doshi architect, who had returned after working
with Le Carbousier, Prof. Bernard Kohn, architect-planner
who was a student of Prof. Louis Kahn, and Dr. R.
N. Vakil who had studied, taught and worked in the
United States and returned to India. There were new
ideas and concepts to be tried out in the Indian context.
It was also thought to develop a campus offering programmes
in related disciplines such as planning, building
and construction technology, interior design, landscape
architecture, environmental issues, and so on. Thus
came the School of Planning (1972) offering postgraduate
programmes in urban and regional planning, environmental
planning and housing; the School of Building Science
and Technology (1982) and the School of Interior Design
(1991). Several postgraduate programmes were added
as need arose: Urban Design, Landscape Architecture,
Construction and Project Management and Structural
Design.
In view of the need to create a structure that would
utilize the synergy generated by integrating diverse
disciplines the Centre for Environmental Planning
and Technology (CEPT) was established by
the Ahmedabad Education; and, it was registered as
a separate public charitable trust and a society in
1994.
