Gujarat has a long
historical and cultural tradition. Gujarat is Situated
on the western part of the Indian sub-continent, Gujarat gets its
name 'Gujaratta', i.e. the land of Gurjars. The
Gurjars passed through the Punjab and settled in some parts of Western
India, which came to be known as Gujarat. According the Hindu
epics Lord Krishna and his brother Balaram left Mathura to settle
on the west coast of Saurashtra at Dwarka.

Gujarat has various kingdoms like Mauryas, Guptas,
Pratiharas etc. The Chalukyan kings were able to put general
prosperity and well being of the state. After this glorious respite,

In the eighth century, the Parsees first landed in Sanjan
on the shores of Gujarat, they fled from Iran.
The Muslim influence left its lasting imprints on the local art
and architecture and it known as the Indo-Saracenic style.
British set up warehouses in Surat
in 1612, before that Portuguese settled in Diu,
a small island, southern coast of Saurashtra.
Gujarat was a part of the earlier Mumbai,
during the British Rule. In 1960, the 'Gujarati'
population decided to separate from that union, After that two new
states were resulted, namely Gujarat and Maharashtra.
The Gujarat state came into existence on May 01,
1960. The state is surrounded by the Arabian Sea on the west, Madhya
Pradesh in the south east and Maharashtra in south,
Pakistan and Rajasthan in the north and north-east
respectively. Gujarat has 1600 kms long Arabian
Sea coastline. which is stretches from Kutchch
in the West to Daman in the South and the hilly
tract from Aravalli in the East to the Western hills with lush green
forests, rivers as well as plains.
Gujarat has been recognized as one of the leading industrialized
states in the country. There are many large and medium
and also small scale industrial units. The principal industries
are textiles, chemicals, and petro-chemicals complex
of IPCL and Gujarat Oil refinery
located near Baroda.
Gujarat is also the main producer of tobacco,
cotton and groundnut in the country.
People of Gujarat Gujarat's population is overwhelmingly Hindu,
with Muslim and Jain minorities. The diverse ethnic groups
may be broadly categorized as Indic (i.e., northern-derived) or
Dravidian (southern-derived). The former include the Nagar Brahman,
Bhatia, Bhadela, Rabari, and Mina castes (the Parsis, originally
from Persia, represent a much later northern influx); among the
people of southern origin are the Bhangi, Koli, Dubla, Naikda, and
Macchi-Kharwa tribes. The rest of the population, including the
aboriginal Bhil tribe, exhibits mixed characteristics. Members of
the scheduled castes and of the aboriginal tribes form nearly one-fifth
of the state's population. Gujarati and Hindi are the state's
official languages.
